Design and Facilitation
I’ve been in the learning space for over a decade and a half and have worked with over one hundred organizations across the globe.
In my journey in the learning space, I’ve seen a lot of reliance on the intellect as the most valuable form of intelligence.
I can understand how important this modality is but what ignites my faculties is how equally important and powerful, is the space of emotions and feelings.
The third very valuable nugget in my opinion, is the ability to harness knowledge which is in our unconscious awareness and move this into our conscious awareness using new techniques like #serious play and #psychodramaticcoaching which are truly transformational.
The reason, these modalities are so powerful is that all the answers come from within and that in my opinion is truly magnificent.
I’m a true custodian of the fact that the best answers lie with us and all we need to do is find different ways to access them.
So, in my opinion, while designing any learning intervention it’s imperative to marry all these three formats to make the intervention meaningful and lasting. So, let me give you a simple example of how this works.
The Oz model of ownership and accountability; is simple and appealing. I’ve used it often and value its depth and its simplicity.
It has four steps:
- See It
- Own It
- Solve it
- Do it
While I was designing an activity for my workshop using this framework; As a facilitator, I took the liberty to add a layer of connecting this powerful framework to emotions.
To See It, I first need to face my fear and allow myself to engage with this emotion of fear and feel it; else many times, many of us turn a blind eye to what’s visible. The problem is deeply buried and we don’t feel ready to engage with it. We need to bring fear to the forefront and engage with it.
The Own It; I most definitely need to connect to “Veeryam” or Courage. An interesting question I need to ask myself “What is my journey with the emotion of Courage.”?
Is it easy for me to access this emotion of courage or do I feel disconnected from this emotion?
What can I do differently to engage with this emotion and make it a more meaningful part of my life?
To Solve It; I could do with innovation, bring new ideas to life and connect to the emotion of “Adbhuta” or surprise.
An interesting quote that I read recently said Vulnerability is the birthplace of Creativity.
Finally, to Do It, one needs to be in a place of Joy; it’s a known fact that is so obvious however, I’ve not seen a lot of people pay much attention towards it.
If I’m Joyful I’m able to easily drive results. All the work happens in half the time.
I’m much more efficient and able to do much more.
However, most people are only focusing on how to drive results and don’t focus much on happiness and joy.
However, there is a strong correlation and the day we really value and respect all the forms of intelligence and bring them together; only then learning can feel complete and real.
We talk about driving change in our organizations I think; we as learning professionals could also be open to the way learning is designed and created.
